| Q1
We missed the sign-up. Can my kid still join the program?
A1 Yes.
Q2 We want to go to local tourneys but a
coach may not be available. How does that work?
A2 You are the coach. Brackets are
posted at each tourney. Listen for instructions.
Encourage your wrestler from mat-side.
Q3 Is a singlet required to enter a tournament?
A3 No. Practice t-shirt and shorts are
acceptable.
Q4 How long does a tourney take?
A4 Typically 3-4 hours. Sometimes longer.
Each round is completed before the next starts. Plan for some
down-time in-between, for both wrestler and family. Game boys are
pretty popular, so are cards.
Q5 Some kids get upset after losing. How
do you handle that?
A5 Almost always it's frustration. Don't
put undue pressure on your wrestler to win. Try and encourage in a
positive manner, for example "You did a lot of good things out there, good job...".
You can talk about things to work on later.
Q6 My beginner wrestler loses most of the time.
Maybe it's not the right sport?
A6 Wrong. A little technique goes a long
way over no technique at all. Also, natural ability is magnified
in the early years, but technique WILL compensate over time.
Q7 Is there some kind of parents handbook for
those new to youth wrestling?
A7 Try this link, it may have some useful info
for you.
Parents Guide
Q8 What do the hand signals the
referees use mean?
A8 Here's a basic chart of
hand signals
Q9 Is head gear a good idea?
A9
Headgear for kids is optional for the youth
program, however it's not just for show. Kids' ears can be
injured. One model that is as good as any and better than most is
Youth Sized Cliff Keen Tornado Headgear. It can
easily be purchased online if you Google it.
